Wednesdays with the Saints
Evening Prayer Service
Daily prayers are said at Saint James on a regular schedule, and we invite you to join us each week as we remember some of the people who helped shaped the church throughout the centuries. Our time together includes the liturgy from the Book of Common Prayer, readings, scripture, prayers, music and on occasion, light incense. Bring a friend!
As we begin the New Year, we celebrate the life of Julia Chester Emery, National Secretary of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Board of Missions of the Episcopal Church—a position she held for 40 years.
During her tenure, Julia visited every diocese in the United States and also served as a delegate to the Pan-Anglican Congress and the Lambeth Conference in 1908. She also traveled to Japan, China, Hong Kong and the Philippines for the advancement of missions. Because of her tireless work, women became eligible to receive canonical status as deaconesses, and the Women’s Auxiliary was given an important role in the General Convention. One of her most notable legacies was the founding of the United Thank Offering. Women were given a small box with a slit in the top and were encouraged to place a small contribution in it whenever they felt thankful. Once a year, the women would present their thank offerings to the parish. The money was then sent to national headquarters to be used for missions. Known by many as Miss Julia, she died in New York City on January 9, 1922 and is buried in the cemetery of St. James the Less in Scarsdale, New York.
