The concept of what is now known as contemplative prayer and Christian meditation began in the desert tradition of early Christianity dating back to the 4th century. More recently, the discipline and practice of daily Christian meditation gained world-wide attention through the life and ministry of John Main OSB (1926-1982) and the work of those to whom he ministered.

In 1975, John Main opened the first Christian Meditation Centre at Ealing Abbey in London. It was to be a culmination of his life-long desire for God and service to others. He realized that the prayer of the heart could guide many modern people into a deeper knowledge of God’s love and his will for their life. The World Community for Christian Meditation, of which Saint James is a member, grew from his work and continues to express the truth of John Main’s insight for our time.
