Contemplative Prayer: Teaching – Desert Spirituality

Tuesdays, 7 – 8:15 PM
Saint James Chapel

Who were the desert mothers and fathers of ancient times? Why did they seek such solitude, and what can we learn from them today? Join us this Tuesday as we discuss the article Blurring the Boundaries: Paradox in the Spirituality of the Desert Mothers and Fathers. We’ll learn more about these desert elders and the wisdom they offer us.

For the season of Lent, we will also offer gentle movement at 6:30 PM in the narthex with yoga instructor Roberta Strickler. No mat, equipment or special clothing is needed. Come experience how gentle movement can serve as an energy releasing, calming bridge into your meditation at 7 PM!

Lenten Book Study

Wednesday Evenings in Lent, Beginning February 21, 7 PM
Parish House Library

Join Timothy Weaver and Fr. David as they lead a book study on American Philosophy: A Love Story, by John Kaag. This is an amazing and simple book about how ideas are not enough when one’s life falls apart but also how important they are in helping to heal the heart and soul when love seems to let us down.

Jesus JourneyWomen’s Gathering

Wednesday, February 21, 5:15 – 7:00 PM
Saint James Chapel and Parish House Library

After evening prayer in the chapel, we will make our way to the parish house library where we will discuss Trent Sheppard’s Jesus Journey: Shattering the Stained Glass Superhero and Discovering the Humanity of God. Christians worldwide believe that Jesus is God. But this belief wasn’t the starting point for Jesus’ earliest followers. While Jesus’ humanity was a given for the disciples, his divinity was a truth they grew into believing. Join us for a time of fellowship, prayer and reflection as we encounter Sheppard’s down-to-earth reflections and discover the “vibrant humanity of the historical Jesus.”

Lenten Compline

The service of Compline {pronounced cóm-plin} is based on the closing time of prayer in the Daily Office, or monastic cycle of prayer. It is said in monasteries around 9:00 PM, when darkness has fallen and bedtime is near. The thoughts that inspire our prayers during Compline are the need we have of divine protection against the powers of darkness. We also pray for peace and rest as night falls.
