Intergenerational Service & Retreat Journey

Brookland Retreat Center

Dates:  July 13 – July 17, 2026

Saint James youth, adults, and families are invited to join us for an intergenerational service and retreat experience at the Brookland Retreat Center in Pennsylvania’s beautiful Northern Tier. This trip is open to rising 7th graders and older.

Now in its fifth year, Saint James folks and friends will return to Potter County to partner in meaningful service projects focused on conservancy and restoration, alongside learning on indigenous sacred grounds and engaging in contemplative practices. Together, we will live, work, pray, and play in a place known for its forests, streams, state parks, and wide-open skies.

In addition to service, the week will include time for hiking, swimming, stargazing, and community building. Service and retreat experiences like this can be deeply transformative, strengthening our connections with one another while working to assist the lives of others.

Meals

Pairs of missioners will volunteer to prepare evening meals for everyone. Each participant will be expected to bring and prepare his or her own breakfast and lunch. In some cases, lunches may be provided by the homeowners for whom we will be working.

Cost

We plan to donate for the use of the Brookland Retreat Center for the week. Contributions to the Mission Trip Fund at Saint James are appreciated. A link will be available for safe, online giving, or checks can be sent to Saint James with 2026 Service Retreat on the memo line. Everyone will be expected to bring their own breakfast, lunch and snack food, and to provide the groceries for the evening meal, which they volunteer to prepare. All are welcome to bring food items to share if they wish. Those staying at the B&B must book and pay for their own room. A stargazing night may be an option (depending on weather) and we will need to pay our “guide.”

Transform Jersey Shore Area

For the past three years, volunteers from Saint James have traveled northwest to the borough of Jersey Shore, in Lycoming County. Once an industrial boom-town, the area has endured economic difficulties made worse by massive industrial accidents and flooding from Hurricane Agnes in 1972.

Transform Jersey Shore Area (TJSA) is a hometown mission trip created by Trinity Episcopal Church in Jersey Shore, PA. This outreach program is bolstered by an ecumenical body of believers from area churches and organizations whose goal is to show and share the love of Christ—one community, one neighborhood, one life at a time. By forming community partnerships and relationships with their neighbors, they are working together to repair and renew homes and transform their town.

Saint James Plays a Role in this Endeavor

For the past three years, volunteers from Saint James have traveled to Jersey Shore and contributed their time, skills, gifts and talents to neighborhoods in need.
In 2017, jobs included scraping and painting, installing insulation and siding, replacing a hot water heater and a kitchen faucet, installing two sets of steps and a deck, and repairing a shingle roof.
