Children's Communion Class

For children grades 2 and above or ages 6 - 8

Beginning March 8 and continuing through Palm Sunday, Saint James Children’s Chapel will offer a special Eucharist series during the 10:30 AM service. With lessons led alongside our clergy, children and youth will explore more deeply the holy meal we share each week.

Many parents wonder: At what age should my child receive Communion? The Episcopal Church honors two faithful traditions. One sees Baptism as the primary rite of Christian initiation, after which anyone, child or adult, is welcome to receive Holy Communion. In this understanding, the joy and mystery of the sacrament unfold over time as a child grows into a deeper awareness of the “gift, grace, and presence” of Christ in the bread and wine.

The other tradition marks a “First Communion” following age-appropriate preparation, celebrating it as a meaningful rite of passage for a child and family.

At Saint James, we honor and often blend both traditions. During these weeks of Lent, a traditional season of preparation and teaching, StephJo Wise and the Clergy will guide our children in learning about Holy Communion. Those who wish to make their First Communion will be prepared to do so on Palm Sunday at the start of Holy Week, while children who already receive will deepen their understanding as they reflect on the shared practice of coming to the table together as a church family.
