Global Philanthropy Leaders Program for Youth

Stewarding our talents and treasure

Beginning September 17th | 11:30 AM - 1 PM
Parish house library | Lunch will be provided
For Youth in grades 8 - 12

Saint James hosts a youth-led impact investing program to give high schoolers exposure to and experience with the basics of investing and microlending while growing in their faith in a relaxed setting with friends (and food!).

The group meets monthly for six sessions in the parish house library beginning September 17th. Each session follows a prepared curriculum including video instruction, group discussion, activities and special guests. Lunch from Lancaster-based restaurant entrepreneurs receiving microloans from ASSETS is provided.

Participants receive $250 to choose and manage a portfolio of microloans through Kiva.org on their own time.

Global Philanthropy Leaders was founded in 2017 by St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Connecticut. The program teaches teens about global poverty and  introduces them to a website that facilitates microloans to struggling entrepreneurs across the world. Teens learn how to evaluate borrowers based on what the borrowers want do with their business and the likelihood that the money will be paid back. When the money is repaid, participants re-loan it to other borrowers. Adults advise the participants, but the teens make the final call on how and to whom they will loan money. At the end of the program, participants present the work they have done showing what they have learned and how they have used the money—that was gifted to them—to do God’s work in the world.

Note: Participants should bring a device (phone, tablet or laptop) for accessing the kiva.org website during sessions.

Meetings: Sundays 9/17, 10/15, 11/12, 1/TBD, 2/TBD, and 3/17 ; dates subject to change.
